Is the Canon PowerShot S5 IS getting dated? When will the next generation Canon PowerShots hit the market?

Right now, I believe the SD1100 is out. But a new generation does not automatically make it a better one. Right now, I have the SD850 IS, and it performs a lot better than the SD1000, and it has a lot more features. You should look into the different features that you want in a camera.
I bought my S1 IS in December of 2004, and so far it has done very well. I think it would fully depend on what you are expecting out of your camera. I personally chose my PowerShot because of the GREAT optical zoom capability as compared to the digital zoom. The S5 IS now also has great mega-pixel capabilities added to that as well. The other nice thing about it is that it has some capabilities that you can find on your DSLR’s, such as being able to change exposure times, f-stops, and metering. Even my S1 IS has those capabilities. This is useful if you want a point and shoot, but still want to be able to manipulate exposures if the situation warrants it. And for the Canon the other poster mentioned… you lose a lot of digital zoom on that one. There are two other high-end advanced digital cameras that are listed by Canon. One is the PowerShot TX1:
