A DSLR or as you call it system camera is much better than even the best point and shoot. Some of the reasons why are as follows.
Sensors: Point and shoot cameras have tiny sensors. The sensor on a DSLR is about 15 times larger. Larger sensor produce finer detail, dynamic range and significantly better low light high ISO performance.
Lenses: DSLR’s use interchangeable lenses that are optically far better than the all purpose lenses used on point and shoot cameras. You can also choose the lens that best suits the situation.
Other benefits to a DSLR include much faster more accurate auto focus, better faster processors and analog to digital converters. They are also fully adjustable and can easily be used with external flashes and studio lighting.
The G10 is a great point and shoot camera that has many features but is not as good as an SLR.
